Yes, I already modified the layout string. These are just relative widths for the columns (cells).

It doesn't change the empty space on the left hand side of the page just before the module LEFT.

Do you have a phone number or skype where I can call you, because I think you still don't understand what the problem is. I want to move THE WHOLE PAGE towards the left hand edge of the screen.
There seems to be some kind of offset before the left-hand-side modules display content (LEFT, TOP1, USER1, BOTTOM1, etc.)

I made some changes as a TEMPORARY WORKAROUND until you can find a way to fix it...

I set the widths to 1=0, 8=0, 3=0 and the page width to 1200 pixels. I think the width should be set back to 960 pixels, because not everybody has wide screens.

But if I change the page width then I start to get big margins on the left of the TOP1 and LEFT, as well as JOOM_CONTENT. The layout seems to stretch out.

Please can you explain to me how to set the horizontal start positions of the modules, and how to set the widths more accurately.

I don't understand why you want answer the question. Other people want to know also how to do it. The blankie template seems to be mostly trial and error - there is not much control as to where to place content.

I totally don't understand what is problem, 1=0, 8=0, 3=0 is right way to do it.
0 you have in those format string is number of empty blocks before position.
You can set padding on each potion by using position name as css class name, for content area it's .content_sparky{... , that way you can control content offset with more accuracy.
