Making 'active' nav text a different color

I solved a few issues already but this one I haven't been able to figure out yet. I am using a top nav and have changed backgrounds etc. but really want the selected page in the nav (the 'active' page) text to be black. I have tried editing the template_css stylesheet (li active) and several other places but nothing seems to have an effect. Does anyone know how to access the color for the 'active' nav text without changing all the nav text?
