I think I have the problem solved. In order to get the cart button working, I changed my Home Page menu link from a Front Page Blog to just an article link, then I created a simple Welcome Message on the home page. Now the cart is working fine. The problem seems to be the way the template handles the front page, since on the demo, there isn't a page associated with the Home Page, it seems to get confused on the cart.
Once, I changed the Home page, I did have a white article appear with a white background which didn't look very good so I decided to change the whole site to black. I had to go to the layout and modify my colors and there was a image file for the content I also had to modify. Now everything is working great.
