what happens when you set _mobile template to default, are then templates like they should be on mobile version?

Also did you try with template duplication instead of renamed copy?

making a copy in the Joomla Admin does not work the same and does not create additional template folders in cPanel. If I want to make changes to the css etc I have to rename the template and upload it like a new template.

when I set the _mobile to the default then the desktop version is 400px wide and is really messed up

maybe you just want to do viewport scaling instead of changing actual width.

It would be easier for me to know why this is happening with this template as when Bees is set as to default the width is not an issue.

If the scaling was added to just the mobile version then where that go.

see this:

stackoverflow.com/questions/1230019/how-...es-rotation-properly

you would edit index.php of _mobile version to add that meta tag

that meta tag does not seem to do anything or it is just for the iPhone and I don't have an iPhone
